We are actively seeking volunteers to help empower refugee families and students as they navigate their new lives in our community. There are several ways you can make a meaningful impact, whether through tutoring, family support, or skills training. By joining our volunteer team, you’ll be a part of an important mission to help refugees build independence, gain new skills, and thrive in their new environment. Here are the current opportunities to get involved:
Sign up here to help volunteer for Sawa Sawa Tutoring! We meet at Green Bay Community Church in room 218 every Thursday evening to help support students with learning English and grade-level skills. Materials and support will be provided, including partnering you with a more experienced tutor if you prefer. Our volunteering needs include helping students with homework, setting up, packing up, and supervising children during the meal and activity. Tutors are welcome to join us at 5:30 for a kid-friendly meal. Tutoring and homework help is from 6:00-7:15pm, followed by an education activity and/or game until 7:40pM. You can sign up for one or more time slots for each day you are volunteering. If you can help for part of a time slot, please indicate the time you are available in the comment. Adult English class: Anyone who wishes to assist the teacher in an English lesson or willing to be a substitute for the teacher.
Family-to-Family Allies: We are seeking compassionate Allies to help refugee families by connecting with them one-on-one in our Family-to-Family program. As an Ally, you'll provide guidance and support as refugees adjust to their new community. You can work with your family any day that suits you, and every other Thursday from 6 PM to 7:30 PM, we gather for a shared meal and start doing the education educational sessions. These gatherings focus on empowering refugees with the tools they need to integrate successfully, covering topics such as job readiness, financial literacy, and community engagement. Trainings are provided for both Allies and refugees to ensure a smooth and positive experience.
Childcare Volunteers: We are looking for volunteers to provide childcare during our Family-to-Family program every Thursday evening, especially for parents who are unable to attend the sessions because they do not have someone to care for their children. Your help ensures these parents can participate and gain the skills they need.
Driving Instructors: We need volunteers to help teach refugee families how to drive, as it is essential for their independence and self-sufficiency. Our goal is to help at least one family member in each household become a licensed driver. Mileage reimbursement is provided for this program.
Drivers/transportation Anyone willing to assist in transporting children, adults to English class, tutoring or family to family program.
